Every January 31st, World Scotch Tape Day is celebrated, an ideal date to highlight a seemingly simple yet crucial element in numerous professional processes. In many sectors, including signage, graphic printing, and visual communication, adhesive tape is an essential ally for ensuring precise and long-lasting finishes.
HISTORY OF ADHESIVE TAPES
The history of adhesive tape begins in the 1920s with Richard Gurley Drew, a 3M engineer, who developed an effective solution for protecting surfaces during painting without damaging them. This led to the creation of the first masking tape in 1925, and a few years later, in 1930, the transparent cellophane adhesive tape, officially launched on January 31st, the date that gave rise to this commemoration.
A few years earlier, in 1890, Tesa began in Germany, its origins rooted in the failed development of an adhesive bandage. The bandage adhered perfectly, but irritated the skin. Dr. Oscar Troplowitz turned necessity into a virtue and in 1896 launched the first technical adhesive tape for repairing bicycle tires.
Later, Tesa engineers had a brilliant idea: to develop a product that anyone could use to seal windows and doors without needing to be a skilled tradesperson or spend large sums of money. In 1954, the product developers invented a self-adhesive sealing profile made of plastic foam. A year later, the strips were marketed under the name Tesamoll®.
